SAIFD at Mississippi State University

AIFD always welcomes the opportunity to partner with students and colleges offering Horticulture degrees. At the AIFD Southern Chapter, we have two student chapters (SAIFD) in our region. Today, Cole Etheredge CFD, Assistant Professor of Floral Management at Mississippi State University, shares with us what the classes are like within the SAIFD of Mississippi State University.

The Basic Floral Design class, offers an introduction into the concepts and practices of floral design. It includes an in-depth study of the basic principles and elements of design used in floral composition. Students are provided an opportunity to understand the basic principles of design, as well as the design process and implement this process through the medium of floral materials. Hands-on laboratory experiences allow students to practice the art of floral design.

For the final design project in the class, students come up with a design concept based on a selected event and theme. The following pictures show just some of the design’s students have created in the past. Most of the students taking this course are between the ages of 18-21 and have never take a floral design course before.

On the Wedding Floral Design class, the major components are the application of floral design principles and elements as applied to wedding flowers, selling wedding flowers, and techniques of designing wedding flowers

Throughout the course students get the opportunity to design a wide array of floral designs that can be used in weddings the following are just a few examples of what students have created in the past in the class.
